Golden Hour or Overcast? When to Schedule Your Family Session
Timing can make or break your family portraits. Here's exactly when to book for the most flattering, natural light in any season.
Light Is Everything
Ask any photographer what the single most important factor is for great portraits, and they will say the same thing: light. And the good news is, you don't need fancy equipment to get it right — you just need to show up at the right time.
The Golden Hour
The "golden hour" refers to the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset. During these windows, sunlight is:
- Warm in tone — giving skin a healthy, natural glow
- Low in angle — creating soft, directional shadows that add depth
- Diffused — avoiding harsh shadows under eyes and noses
For most family sessions, the evening golden hour is ideal. Kids are usually more rested after naps, and the light is at its most magical.
Overcast Days Are Your Friend
Contrary to popular belief, a cloudy day can be perfect for family photos. Cloud cover acts as a giant natural softbox:
- Even lighting on all faces, regardless of direction
- No squinting from bright sun
- Rich, saturated colors in clothing and backgrounds
- More scheduling flexibility — you are not locked into a 60-minute window
Season-by-Season Guide
Spring — Schedule for late afternoon. The sun sets earlier than summer, so aim for 1-2 hours before sunset. Cherry blossoms and green fields make stunning backdrops.
Summer — Evening sessions are a must. Midday sun is too harsh. Book for 1-1.5 hours before sunset and enjoy the longest golden hour of the year.
Fall — The most popular season for family photos, and for good reason. The warm foliage and soft autumn light around 4-5 PM create magic.
Winter — Don't overlook winter! The low sun angle means golden hour light lasts longer. Bundle up in cozy layers — think scarves, beanies, and textured knits.
The One Time to Avoid
High noon on a sunny day. The overhead sun creates unflattering shadows under eyes, harsh contrast, and lots of squinting. If this is your only option, find open shade under a tree or covered structure.
